Though initially dismissed by the British as a mere sepoy mutiny, the uprising was, in fact, a widespread and spirited reaction to years of oppressive rule, economic exploitation, and cultural insensitivity. The immediate cause of the revolt was the introduction of the new Enfield rifle. Rumors spread among Indian soldiers that the cartridges used in the rifle were greased with the fat of cows and pigs—sacred to Hindus and forbidden to Muslims. This insult to religious sentiments triggered the spark of rebellion in the British Indian Army, particularly in Meerut.
