SSC GK COURSE PART 10 - The Great Bath, Mohenjodaro & Harappan Discoveries

The Great Bath, Mohenjodaro & Harappan Discoveries 🌐 English Version: The Great Bath of Mohenjodaro is one of the most iconic and earliest examples of public water tanks in the ancient world. Located near the Great Granary, it reflects the high level of urban planning and civic architecture in the Indus Valley Civilization . The bath was designed to be water-tight , with a layer of natural tar (bitumen) applied over finely fitted bricks sealed with gypsum plaster . The structure features two wide staircases on the north and south ends leading into the bath, which had brick edging along the entire width to allow movement without entering the water. The water was likely drawn from a massive well in a nearby room. Its layout and construction suggest it was used for special religious rituals or public ceremonies . The Indus Valley Civilization spanned a vast area from north-east Afghanistan to north-west India , flourishing between 3000 BCE and 1500 BCE . Its key ur...

Dholavira and Lothal – Glimpses of Urban Excellence in the Harappan Civilization 🌐 English Version: The ancient Harappan cities of Dholavira and Lothal are located in the present-day Indian state of Gujarat . These sites reflect the technological and architectural sophistication of the Indus Valley Civilization . 🔸 Dholavira: Dholavira was located on Khadir Beyt in the Rann of Kutch . This site had fertile land and a good supply of freshwater , which made it suitable for agriculture and habitation. One of the most unique features of Dholavira was its three-part division —each section was surrounded by massive stone walls and contained large open ceremonial spaces . Dholavira is also known for large Harappan inscriptions , including wood carvings and seals written using white stone. These represent some of the earliest forms of writing in India. 🔸 Lothal: Lothal , another major Harappan city, was situated on a tributary of the Sabarmati river in Gujarat. It is co...

SSC GK COURSE PART 6 - Neolithic Sites in India – Burzahom, Utnur, Paiyampalli & Hallur

Neolithic Sites in India – Burzahom, Utnur, Paiyampalli & Hallur 🌐 English Version: The Burzahom archaeological site is one of the most significant Neolithic sites in India. It is located in the Kashmir Valley , in the Srinagar district of Jammu and Kashmir . This site showcases unique pit dwellings , where people lived in underground houses with steps leading down into them. These dwellings tell a comprehensive story of human life and culture from around 3000 BCE to 1000 BCE . Burzahom is particularly important because it demonstrates the transition in human settlements—from subterranean (underground) living in the Neolithic period to ground-level mud-brick houses used by the Megalithic people . Excavations at Burzahom began in the year 1939 , revealing evidence of domesticated animals, farming, and tool usage. Apart from Burzahom, several other Neolithic sites are crucial to understanding early Indian history. Utnur , located in the Adilabad district of Telangan...

Port Cities and Rakhigarhi – The Maritime and Urban Legacy of Harappan Civilization 🌐 English Version: The Indus Valley Civilization was not only known for its town planning and drainage system, but also for its maritime trade and well-developed port cities . Some of the important port towns of the Indus Valley Civilization include Sutkagendor , Balakot , Lothal , Allahdino , and Kuntasi . These sites show evidence of sea trade with West Asia and the Persian Gulf. These ports helped in the export of goods like beads, cotton textiles, and semi-precious stones. However, it is important to note that Rakhigarhi , despite being the largest Harappan site in the Indian subcontinent, is not a port town. It is located inland, around 27 kilometers from the seasonal Ghaggar River , in the Sarasvati river plain . Rakhigarhi is one of the most significant archaeological discoveries related to the Indus Valley Civilization . Excavations at this site have revealed a long cultural con...
