Unlike the other five zonal councils created under the States Reorganisation Act, the NEC is a statutory advisory body specially designed to focus on the development of the 8 North-Eastern states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim.
