The Four Vedas – Foundation of Vedic Knowledge

The Vedas are the most sacred texts of ancient Indian literature and form the backbone of Hindu philosophy, rituals, and culture. The word “Veda” comes from the Sanskrit root “Vid”, meaning knowledge. There are four Vedas:

🔹 1. Rigveda:

The Rigveda is the oldest of all Vedas and is regarded as one of the oldest religious texts in the world. It is often called “the first testament of mankind.” It comprises 1,028 hymns (Suktas) arranged in 10 Mandalas (books).

• The 2nd to 7th Mandalas are known as Family Books (Gotra or Vamsha Mandalas).

• These are associated with ancient sages like Gritsamada, Vishvamitra, Atri, Bharadwaj, and Vashishtha.

• The 8th Mandala is attributed to Kanvas and Angiras.

• The 9th Mandala contains Soma hymns, and the 10th Mandala includes the famous Purushasukta and other philosophical hymns.

• The 3rd Mandala contains the Gayatri Mantra, dedicated to the Sun God Savitri.

• Saraswati is mentioned as the deity river.

🔹 2. Samaveda:

The Samaveda is also known as the Veda of melodies or chants. It contains 1,549 hymns, most of which are derived from the Rigveda (except 75). It is used in Soma sacrifices and chanted by the Udgatri priests.

• It is important for Indian classical music and contains elements like the Dhrupad raga.

• The Sama Veda is a musical rendering of the Rigvedic hymns.

🔹 3. Yajurveda:

The Yajurveda is the Veda of rituals, primarily used during sacrificial ceremonies (Yajnas). It is divided into two versions:

• Shukla (White) Yajurveda – arranged in clear order.

• Krishna (Black) Yajurveda – disorganized and unstructured.

It contains prose and poetic mantras that guide rituals like the Ashvamedha Yajna and Purushamedha.

🔹 4. Atharvaveda:

The Atharvaveda is unique among the four Vedas. It is a book of magical formulas, spells, and healing hymns. It includes:

• Prayers to ward off evils and diseases.

• Verses for domestic peace, prosperity, and success.

It reflects a more folk and practical aspect of Vedic life, unlike the other three which are more ceremonial.

वेद प्राचीन भारतीय साहित्य के सबसे पवित्र ग्रंथ माने जाते हैं और हिंदू धर्म की दार्शनिक और सांस्कृतिक नींव हैं। 'वेद' शब्द 'विद्' धातु से बना है, जिसका अर्थ है ज्ञान। चार वेद होते हैं:

🔹 1. ऋग्वेद:

ऋग्वेद सबसे प्राचीन वेद है और इसे विश्व का सबसे प्राचीन धार्मिक ग्रंथ माना जाता है। इसे "मानवता का प्रथम ग्रंथ" भी कहा जाता है। इसमें 1,028 सूक्त और 10 मंडल होते हैं।

• द्वितीय से सप्तम मंडल को परिवार मंडल (वंश मंडल) कहते हैं।

• ये मंडल ऋषि गृत्समद, विश्वामित्र, अत्रि, भारद्वाज, वशिष्ठ से संबंधित हैं।

• आठवाँ मंडल कण्व और अंगिरस से जुड़ा है।

• नवम मंडल सोम स्तुतियों का संकलन है।

• दशम मंडल में पुरुषसूक्त सहित दार्शनिक मंत्र हैं।

• गायत्री मंत्र तीसरे मंडल में आता है और यह सविता देवता को समर्पित है।

• सरस्वती को ऋग्वेद में देवी नदी कहा गया है।

🔹 2. सामवेद:

सामवेद को माधुर्य का वेद कहा जाता है। इसमें 1,549 मंत्र होते हैं, जिनमें से अधिकतर ऋग्वेद से लिए गए हैं (केवल 75 मंत्र छोड़कर)। इसका उपयोग सोम यज्ञों में होता है और इसे उद्गाता पुरोहित गाते हैं।

• यह वेद भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीत का मूल आधार है।

• इसमें ध्रुपद राग जैसी ध्वनियाँ शामिल हैं।

🔹 3. यजुर्वेद:

यजुर्वेद एक कर्मकांड प्रधान वेद है। यह यज्ञों और अनुष्ठानों के लिए प्रयोग होता है। इसके दो प्रकार हैं:

• शुक्ल यजुर्वेद (सफेद) – व्यवस्थित रूप में।

• कृष्ण यजुर्वेद (काला) – अव्यवस्थित और अस्पष्ट।

इसमें अश्वमेध यज्ञ जैसे अनुष्ठानों के लिए मंत्र और प्रक्रियाएँ वर्णित हैं।

🔹 4. अथर्ववेद:

अथर्ववेद जादुई और लोकिक मंत्रों का संग्रह है। इसमें:

• रोग, भय, और बुरी शक्तियों को दूर करने के मंत्र हैं।

• घरेलू सुख-शांति और समृद्धि के लिए भी प्रार्थनाएँ हैं।

यह वेद अन्य तीन वेदों की अपेक्षा व्यावहारिक और लोक जीवन पर आधारित है।
