BRICS Expansion 2025: Geopolitics, Global Economy, and India’s Strategic Balancing

The BRICS 2025 Summit, held amid deepening fractures in the global order, has marked a significant turning point in the grouping’s evolution. Originally formed in 2009 as a bloc of five emerging economies—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—BRICS has sought to represent the voice of the Global South in global economic governance. In 2025, the grouping formally expanded by admitting several new members, including key energy producers, regional powers, and developing economies, thereby broadening its geopolitical reach and economic weight. This enlargement reflects BRICS’ growing ambition to counterbalance Western-dominated institutions like the IMF and World Bank, while offering an alternative platform for economic cooperation, development financing, and political dialogue.

One of the most debated outcomes of the summit has been the push for trade in local currencies and the development of a BRICS cross-border payment system, aimed at reducing dependence on the US dollar. This “de-dollarisation” effort is framed as a way to protect member states from the extraterritorial impact of Western sanctions and currency volatility. For energy-rich new members, it promises more stable commodity trade, while for manufacturing-heavy economies like China and India, it opens avenues for cost-effective imports and exports. However, such a shift faces practical challenges, including currency convertibility, payment settlement mechanisms, and political trust among members with divergent economic systems.

For India, the BRICS expansion presents both opportunities and strategic dilemmas. On the one hand, the inclusion of new members offers access to larger markets, diversified energy sources, and a stronger platform for advancing Global South priorities such as climate finance, technology transfer, and development reform. On the other hand, India must navigate the grouping’s growing China-centric influence, especially as Beijing seeks to use BRICS to promote its Belt and Road Initiative and increase its geopolitical leverage. India’s ability to shape the BRICS agenda will depend on coalition-building with like-minded members and leveraging its own diplomatic credibility as a bridge between the Global South and the West.

The expansion also has implications for multilateral diplomacy. BRICS now overlaps more significantly with other forums like the G20, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and regional energy alliances. This could lead to greater coordination among emerging economies, but it also risks duplication and fragmentation if agendas clash. Moreover, as BRICS pushes for institutional alternatives—such as expanding the New Development Bank’s lending capacity and launching joint technology projects—India will have to balance its BRICS commitments with its active participation in Western-led platforms like the Quad and I2U2, ensuring its strategic autonomy is preserved.

From a UPSC perspective, BRICS expansion ties into key themes such as multipolarity in international relations, economic sovereignty, and the evolving nature of South-South cooperation. It also raises questions about the future of global governance—whether emerging coalitions can offer viable alternatives to existing institutions, or whether they will become arenas for competing great-power ambitions. As India steps into this more complex BRICS framework, its challenge will be to amplify its leadership role without being drawn into strategic alignments that compromise its broader foreign policy objectives.
