Explanation (English)

The Prime Minister of India is the head of the Government and holds the most powerful executive authority in the country. While the President is the constitutional head, the real executive powers are exercised by the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. The post of the Prime Minister is mentioned under Article 74 and 75 of the Constitution.

The Prime Minister is appointed by the President of India, and is usually the leader of the majority party in the Lok Sabha.
The Prime Minister is the Chairman of the NITI Aayog, head of the Council of Ministers, and the chief spokesperson of the government.

The Prime Minister must be a member of either Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha.
Term: The Prime Minister remains in office as long as he/she enjoys the majority support of the Lok Sabha.

The current Prime Minister of India (2025) is Narendra Modi, serving his third term (since 2014).
