Explanation (English)

The Vice-President of India is the second-highest constitutional position in the country after the President. The Vice-President is the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (Council of States). His office is mentioned under Article 63 of the Constitution.

The Vice-President is elected indirectly by the members of both Houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha + Rajya Sabha) through a system of proportional representation by single transferable vote. The election process is conducted by the Election Commission of India.

The Vice-President holds office for a term of 5 years.
The minimum age required to become Vice-President is 35 years.
To be eligible, a candidate must be qualified to be a member of Rajya Sabha.

The current Vice-President of India (2025) is Jagdeep Dhankhar.
