Teachings & Literature of Jainism (जैन धर्म का साहित्य और सिद्धांत)

Jain literature is preserved in a group of texts called Agamas, which were written in the Ardha-Magadhi Prakrit language. These scriptures form the foundational base of Jain philosophy and teachings, believed to be older than even Mahavira, who formalized them in the 6th century BCE.

The five main teachings of Jainism are:

1. Ahimsa (Non-violence)

2. Satya (Truth)

3. Asteya or Achaurya (Non-stealing)

4. Brahmacharya (Celibacy/Chastity)

5. Aparigraha (Non-possession or Non-attachment)

There are two main sects of Jainism:

• Shwetambaras – White-clad monks who believe women can attain liberation.

• Digambaras – Sky-clad monks who believe only men can attain moksha.

• Agamas are the canonical scriptures compiled from Mahavira’s teachings by his disciples, mainly for Svetambara tradition.

• The Kalpa Sutra, authored by Bhadrabahu, contains biographies of Tirthankaras like Parshvanatha and Mahavira.

• Sutta Pitaka, although Buddhist, is often referenced for comparative understanding—it contains teachings attributed to Buddha and his disciples.

जैन साहित्य को आगम (Agam) कहा जाता है, जो अर्ध-मागधी प्राकृत भाषा में लिखे गए हैं। ये ग्रंथ जैन दर्शन के मूल आधार हैं। इनका अस्तित्व महावीर के जन्म से पहले भी उत्तर भारत में था, जो छठी शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व में हुए।

जैन धर्म के पाँच मुख्य सिद्धांत हैं:

1. अहिंसा (हिंसा न करना)

2. सत्य (सच्चाई बोलना)

3. अचौर्य / अस्तेय (चोरी न करना)

4. ब्रह्मचर्य (इंद्रिय संयम)

5. अपरिग्रह (संपत्ति का मोह न रखना)

जैन धर्म के दो प्रमुख संप्रदाय हैं:

• श्वेतांबर – सफेद वस्त्र धारण करने वाले, जो मानते हैं कि स्त्रियाँ भी मोक्ष प्राप्त कर सकती हैं।

• दिगंबर – नग्न साधु, जो मानते हैं कि केवल पुरुष ही मोक्ष प्राप्त कर सकते हैं।
