Explanation (English)

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is an independent constitutional body responsible for conducting free, fair, and impartial elections in the country. It conducts elections for the President, Vice-President, Parliament (Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha), and State Legislative Assemblies.

The Election Commission is established under Article 324 of the Constitution.

Composition

Originally, the Election Commission had only one Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
Since 1989, it has become a multi-member body consisting of:

1. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC)

2. Two Election Commissioners

Key Powers & Functions

• Prepares and updates voters’ list

• Conducts election schedules and election process

• Allots election symbols to political parties

• Controls model code of conduct during elections

• Declares election results

• Issues Voter ID (EPIC) cards

Other Important Points

• CEC and Election Commissioners are appointed by the President of India

• Their term is 6 years or until the age of 65 years

• They can be removed like Supreme Court judges
