Explanation (English)

The Rajya Sabha is the upper house of the Indian Parliament and represents the states and union territories. It is a permanent house, meaning it cannot be dissolved. However, one-third of its members retire every 2 years and new members are elected.

The Rajya Sabha is mentioned under Article 80 of the Constitution.

Key Features

• Maximum strength: 250 members

  • 238 elected from States & Union Territories

  • 12 nominated by the President (from literature, science, art, social service, and sports)

• Current strength: 245 members (233 elected + 12 nominated)

• Term: 6 years for each member

• Chairman (Presiding Officer): Vice-President of India

• Deputy Chairman: Elected from the members of Rajya Sabha

• Minimum age: 30 years

• Members are elected by MLAs of State Legislative Assemblies through Single Transferable Vote (STV) system.
